Paul W. Chellgren

PAUL W. CHELLGREN is Chairman and CEO of Ashland Inc. He joined Ashland
in 1974 as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board and Chief
Executive Officer. In 1977, he was named Administrative Vice President
of Ashland Chemical Company. He became an Ashland Chemical Group Vice
President the following year. He was named Senior Vice President and
Group Operating Officer of Ashland Oil in 1980 and was elected Senior
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in 1988. In January 1992, he
was elected President and Chief Operating Officer and a member of the
Board of Directors. He was elected Chief Executive Officer October 1,
1996, and Chairman of the Board on January 30, 1997. Mr. Chellgren holds
Directorships in PNC Bank Corp., Medtronics, Inc., the University of
Kentucky, Centre College and the American Petroleum Institute, and he is
a member of the Business Roundtable Policy Committee, the National
Petroleum Council, the National Petroleum Refiners Association and the
Society of the Chemical Industry. He also is a member of the University
of Kentucky Fellows, Chairman of Leadership Tri-State, a Director of the
Marshall University Foundation and the Foundation for the Tri-State
Community, Vice Chairman of the National Foundation for Advancement in
the Arts, and a Director and Secretary/Treasurer of American Friends of
University College, Oxford, Inc. Mr. Chellgren earned a BS from the
University of Kentucky, an MBA from Harvard University and a DDE from
Oxford University. Prior to joining Ashland, Mr. Chellgren was an
Associate with McKinsey & Company in London, England, and Washington,
DC; served as an Operations Analyst in the Office of Secretary of
Defense in Washington, DC; was an Administration Assistant for Boise
Cascade in Boise, Idaho, and Division General Manager in Los Angeles;
and was General Manager of Universal Capital Corp. in Kansas City,
Missouri.
