ALLEN J. LAUER is President and Chief Executive Officer of Varian, Inc.
and is a member of its Board of Directors. Prior to that, he was
Executive Vice President of Varian Associates, Inc., responsible for its
instrument business, one of the company's three core lines with 1998
sales of some $558 million. Since joining Varian in 1965, he has held
numerous key management positions including those of Senior Vice
President, President of it's instrument business, Vice President of
Manufacturing, and General Manager of two business units: vacuum
products and power grid and X-ray tubes. He became an Executive Vice
President in 1990. Before joining Varian, Mr. Lauer was with General
Electric and also served as a commissioned officer in the US Navy. He
received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and
an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. Profile
development, markets and your view of the firm's future potential?
Mr. Lauer: About 16 months ago, we were part of Varian
