Frederick D. Sancilio

DR. FREDERICK D. SANCILIO is the founder of Applied Analytical
Industries, Inc. (AAII) and has served the Company as Director, Chairman
of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer since its inception. He
directs the organization in providing full product development services
to the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to serving on the Board of
Directors of three industry-related organizations, Dr. Sancilio is a
member of a Regional Advisory Board for NationsBank, and of the Board of
Visitors for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, NC. He is a
frequent lecturer for business and professional groups on subjects
ranging from structural activity relationships of pharmaceutical
products to the future direction of the pharmaceutical industry.
Although in recent years Dr. Sancilio has concentrated on the national
and international business aspects of developing chemistry into
medicine, he holds patents in the area of pharmaceutical product
development. Before the inception of AAII, Dr. Sancilio was Assistant
Director at Burroughs-Wellcome Company in Greenville, North Carolina. At
Burroughs-Wellcome, he was responsible for Quality Control and
analytical support to Product Development. He successfully modernized
the Quality Control Laboratories, eliminated the backlog, implemented
stability testing on a routine basis, established liaison with the FDA
and managed the implementation of laboratory automation. He was also
Deputy Director of Quality Assurance and was responsible for the
coordination with the FDA on regulatory issues. Dr. Sancilio was also
employed by Schering-Plough, Inc., in the Pharmaceutical Research
Division where he managed aspects of drug analysis. He started his
career as a physical and analytical chemist in the Research Division of
Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc. Dr. Sancilio earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in
Physical and Analytical Chemistry from Rutgers University. Among
professional awards of note, Dr. Sancilio was recently recognized as a
regional ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Ernst & Young, LLP. He also holds
a distinguished membership in Sigma XI, Scientific Research Society of
North America.
