TWST: Please start with an overview of your coverage in the cardiac care
space. Dr. Aiyar: Right now, I have six companies under coverage; most are
involved in the cardiovascular space. Our firm covers small and mid-cap
companies, and I cover mainly medical device companies. I think the
largest company under my coverage is in the $600 or $700 million market
cap range, and the average is probably closer to $250 or $300 million. TWST: As you look at this cardiac space, what are the current hot
trends? Where is this space going? Dr. Aiyar: Clearly, over the last year and a half or so, you have had a
lot more attention paid to the peripheral market. This has been driven
both on the device side and on the drug side, primarily looking at
peripheral arterial disease. Clearly, cardiovascular disease in general
has garnered a lot of attention over the past decades and should
continue to do so, driven mainly by demographics both in the US and
abroad. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the
US. You have an aging population. Prevalence and incidence continue to
increase. Peripheral arterial disease has been somewhat overlooked.
Again, through both education and additional research, the space has
just gotten a lot more attention in the last year and a half or two
years.
