TWST: What is RadiSys? Mr. Grout: RadiSys is a provider of embedded systems, and embedded
systems are used to drive communication networks, medical imaging
systems and transaction terminals. It is the brains required to drive a
lot of the infrastructure that's used in multiple end markets. The
company is 19 years old. It was founded back in 1987 and began applying
Intel technology to a lot of different industrial and embedded
applications. We have over 480 employees, over 200 of whom are in R&D
and software systems and hardware. We're headquartered in Hillsboro,
Oregon, with a number of locations in the US, Europe, and in Asia-
Pacific. Our most recent focus has been on new platforms for
communication networks. A new standard called ATCA, or advanced
telecommunications architecture, is sweeping the telecom industry as the
way to build communications infrastructure for wireless, wireline, voice
over IP and IPTV. A broad range of different applications is being based
on this platform. RadiSys is fortunate to be one of the leaders in ATCA
products and is the leader in very high capacity or 10-gigabit ATCA
products. TWST: What's the agenda at this point? What are the priorities over the
next 12 months? Mr. Grout: We have a bunch of new and very compelling products coming
out in ATCA and in our commercial market. First and foremost is a strong
focus on getting these compelling new products to market successfully.
We are also working very intimately and closely with our customers to
understand their requirements, what they'd like from the product and the
technology, and helping to enable them to get more products to market,
get faster time to market, and get lower total cost. Strong customer
engagement and getting traction on new products in the marketplace is
very important. Also on the agenda is globalization of the company.
Five or seven years ago, we were a reasonably North American-centric
organization. We now have operations in Japan, China, Mexico and Europe,
and customers all around the globe use our products. In fact, a minority
of our revenues now comes from North America and a majority comes from
Europe and Asia Pacific. Being a global organization is a very important
part of our agenda. The last thing I would mention is that we are
working to bring turnkey platforms to our customers. Historically, we'd
give them individual building blocks to use in their systems. Today, we
are providing a turnkey platform where they can take the whole hardware-
software complex and then just focus on building the applications right
up on top of that.
