TWST: Would you begin with a brief historical sketch of Abaxis, Inc. and
a picture of the company at the present time?
Mr. Severson: Abaxis is a point-of-care blood chemistry company. We have
a small machine about the size of a toaster, along with a plastic disc
that is consumable. You add 100 microliters of whole blood, which is
about five drops, to the plastic disc. You put it in the machine and
push the button, and 12.5 minutes later, you get up to 14 blood
chemistry results. We have the Piccolo for the medical market and the
VetScan for the veterinarian market.
TWST: You mentioned 14 results. Is that as good as you would get if you
were to do it in a conventional way?
Mr. Severson: Yes. The conventional way is sending it off to a
laboratory. 96% of the tests that physicians and veterinarians do are
done like that on a routine basis.
