Mr. Moulder: MGI PHARMA today is an oncology-focused pharmaceutical company. Our strategy is to acquire proprietary products, develop and commercialize them. When we say 'acquire,' we do not conduct internal discovery, so acquisition to us means either obtaining rights to a license arrangement for a product candidate, outright purchase of a product or co-promoting a product that is already commercialized.
TWST: Is it in every case a product that's pretty far along in
development?
Mr. Moulder: Yes, we focus on products that have already demonstrated
some activity in human clinical trials, preferably in the later stages.
TWST: Would you give us some examples of typical products?
Mr. Moulder: A product that we conceived and developed in-house and
currently market is Salagen' Tablets. It has two indications: one is in
oncology, where it's indicated for the treatment of xerostomia, or
severe dry-mouth symptoms associated with radiation therapy for patients
with head and neck cancer; it also has an indication for the treatment
of dry mouth symptoms in patients with Sj”gren's Syndrome, which is an
autoimmune disease that damages the salivary glands. Salagen Tablets is
our lead commercial product, and our sales and marketing organization
promotes Salagen to the oncology and the rheumatology communities.
