Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIA);

Four analysts and top management from seven sector firms examine the broadcasting sector in this special 57-page Broadcasting Industry issue from The Wall Street Transcript, available at (212/952-7433) or http://www.twst.com/info/info531.htm

“I think Viacom’s had a very strong year,” notes a leading analyst. “Certainly when we get into the broadcasting side, Viacom has done remarkably well. Viacom has weathered the recent economic storm and its impact on advertising because they’ve all got enough different businesses as well as such sizeable operations that they can spread the pain around. The Viacom entity is so big and has so many diverse operations — from publishing, to music, to cable nets, to broadcast nets, to film, to home video distribution — that they’ve all been able withstand the storm relatively well.

“At the same time as the economic hardships there was the presence of mind at Viacom to still make strong, wise management decisions. Viacom moved their CFO to the West Coast and put him in charge of the station group. I think that’s turning into a positive because he is aggressively trying to improve the value of the station group. Those are all good management moves that I think have helped the performance of Viacom.” Another analyst sees it a different way, saying, “To a degree, Viacom has been hit with advertising woes because of some of their networks. Nicklodeon, MTV and VH1, to name a few, are advertising-supported cable nets. Viacom took a hit because of those stations.
