TWST: Could we get started with a brief overview of the history and
evolution of MeriStar Hotels & Resorts? Mr. Emery: We're actually two companies: MeriStar Hotels & Resorts and
MeriStar Hospitality. We're a paper-clip REIT. Both are New York Stock
Exchange-listed companies. As to the history, we went public as a C-corp
in 1996, split the companies in 1998 to have a better vehicle, both for
tax purposes and to suit our investor base, and this August we'll
complete six years of being public. TWST: How would you describe the customer base that you cater to at this
point? Mr. Emery: As an owner, we own 112 strictly upscale, full-service
hotels. As an operating company, we manage 277 hotels, comprising pretty
much the full range of hospitality-type properties, everything from
limited-service hotels up to four-star resorts and conference centers;
we also own and operate a corporate housing business in the US and
Europe with about 3,000 corporate apartments. So it's really pretty much
a full range of hospitality-type properties under management. Where
we're the owner/operator of upscale property, we're the largest
owner/operator of Hiltons, Westins and Sheratons, to give you a flavor
of the types of hotels we own.
