TWST: Could we start with a brief overview of the history and evolution
of AutoZone, Inc.? Mr. Odland: AutoZone was founded in 1979 with one store in Forrest City,
Arkansas. We were part of the Malone & Hyde grocery business at that
point, and continued to grow over a period of time by adding stores that
we built. We were spun off as a private company from Malone & Hyde just
before Malone & Hyde was sold to Fleming. AutoZone became a public
company in 1991. Today, AutoZone is a 5 billion company with more than
3,000 stores in the United States and 22 stores in Mexico. We have
approximately 45,000 AutoZoners, as we call them, and in 2001, AZO
shares were among the top five performers among the entire S&P 500. We
were named to the S&P 500 in 1996. We are also a Fortune 500 company. TWST: Who makes up your main competition in this space at this point? Mr. Odland: We compete with mass retailers as well as those who focus on
auto parts retail.
