AVIRON (Nasdaq:AVIR); “Aviron has a new flu vaccine,” says a top analyst. “It is not an injectable, but a nasal spray, and it could be a very big product for Aviron. Boyd Clark is a new CEO and he will spearhead this product’s introduction. The company has now resolved its problems of the past. It had manufacturing problems and an FDA application that was rejected in 1998. They finally met their expected time frame for the submission of the filing in October, and it was accepted late in December. So Aviron is now back on track.

“FluMist provides better protection than the current vaccines, and the fact that it is a spray could facilitate not only more use by adults but also among healthy children who currently don’t get any flu vaccine. The drug not only had a better efficacy rate for preventing flu, it also reduced middle ear infection in children. It also lessens the need for antibiotics.
