TWST: Can you give me an overview of Chelsea Village Plc? Mr. Bewsey: Chelsea Village Plc owns amongst other subsidiary companies,
Chelsea Football Club, which is a professional football club playing in
the premier league in England. It's very successful. We were fifth in
our particular league last year and we were the cup winners for England.
We also played in the European Champions League and got to the quarter
finals, and we were within seven minutes of qualifying for the semi-
finals, which was the most successful event in our 95 year history.
Chelsea Village Plc was created to provide other revenue streams to the
football club, to reduce our dependance on the playing results and
vagaries of sport. To this end, we've built two four-star hotels. We
have four restaurants, a sports bar, and a nightclub. We have our own
television studio and production facility. We have a three-branch
corporate Travel Agent and two shops of sports merchandise. All these
businesses together generate more revenue for the group than the
football club, per se. TWST: Give us background on your own involvement with Chelsea Village. Mr. Bewsey: I joined Chelsea Village as the Group Chief Executive in
August of 1999. They wanted someone with business experience to come and
to drive the other businesses forward in a very objective manner. I
joined them not as a Chelsea Football fan but as a businessman
interested in sport and sports-related businesses. My link to sport
itself, I'm the Vice-Chairman of the National Executive of the Sports
Aid Foundation in Great Britain which raises money for youngsters for
training, equipment and travel. And my experience business-wise was
based around running National Car Parks for 21 years -which I helped
change from a relatively small family concern to Britain's second-
largest private company before it was sold.
