TWST: Give us a brief overview of AirNet Communications Corporation, the company's history, products, services and customers.
Dr. Hamilton: The company was started in 1994 as a spinout of Harris Corporation, based on some technology that Harris had developed for military and government applications. The company is focused on developing best-of-class wireless base stations that are sold to network operators, to people who provide cellular or wireless phone service. The company started shipping its products in early 1997 and has since expanded its customer base and grown its shipments to the point where we are the market leader with the entrepreneurial GSM operators in the US. We have over 77% of that market, which was our initial focus. And we're using that initial success as the reference accounts, the springboard if you will, to move to the international market, which is actually where most of the GSM base stations are sold, and also to the larger operators who buy a lot more base stations. We're based in Melbourne, Florida. We currently have about 200 people, and the company's really key advantage is that we have the only commercially deployed broadband software- defined base station. That's important because broadband means that it's ready for the wireless Internet high speed data standards that are coming, and software-defined means that we can upgrade to those standards by changing software, not hardware. That's a compelling advantage as operators look to evolve their networks to support these new wireless Internet services. We also have the AirSite Backhaul Free Base Station, which is the only product of its kind. The key advantage there is that it's a full-featured base station that does not require a T-1 or E-1 link from the base station back to the phone network. By eliminating that link we save the operator anywhere from 800 to 1,800 dollars per base station per month. And that has a dramatic impact on their bottom line since those transmission costs are typically up to a third of their overall operating costs. The company is well positioned with the right products. Our products won the 1998 GSM world award for best technical innovation. That was based on the votes from 260 GSM network operators from around the world for 'revolutionary base station technology.' And in fact, we have the only infrastructure or base station product to ever win the award.
