A sell sider singles out the management team at Best Buy, led by Chairman & CEO Richard M. Schulze.

“Schulze isn't the one who is necessarily really always running Best Buy these days, day to day. He has a team, including Brad Anderson, the President & COO, and Wade Fenn, the EVP of Marketing. He has a number of people under him. Schulze is an entrepreneur. He founded Best Buy, and he still owns almost 20% of it. And many analysts believe that owner-operator companies, so to speak, tend to perform better. Schulze has more at stake. He's a true entrepreneur, and that's reflected in the store's format and the liveliness it brings. All of these companies -- Best Buy, Circuit City, Tandy -- have all had their issues in the past one way or the other, but Best Buy seems to be emerging as the growth leader in this space, and their stores sort of reflect that energy. And that has something to do with it being a real entrepreneurial company. Management has done a remarkable job of turning Best Buy around from a balance sheet perspective. They went outside and got help for sure at Andersen Consulting, but they've obviously executed well. You don't usually get inventories turning north of seven times, return on equity north of 30%, and a return on capital, return on assets the way you do here. It's just been a fantastic balance sheet story. And of course, what has really helped all of these stocks has been the industry and the economy, so Best Buy has had the wind at its back. You don't want to own one of these companies when there is no product cycle and when the economy is not cooperating."
