Mr. Burns: We're a fabless semiconductor company based here in Silicon Valley that has pioneered integrated power management. We develop and sell fully integrated voltage regulator chips that manage the power for advanced digital semiconductors in servers, laptops, routers and graphics cards. We manage power in a new way that highly differentiates us from our competitors. Volterra's very small, integrated solution eliminates the need for the bulky components that go into a motherboard. So it saves a lot of space in servers and laptops, and it provides much better energy efficiency. We started generating revenue in 2001, became profitable and IPO'd in 2004, and reached more than 104 million in revenue last year, with about 200 employees worldwide.
TWST: Is that alternative way of manufacturing what differentiates you from your competitors?
Mr. Burns: We have a very highly differentiated solution, and that's traditionally been our great advantage. And I think that technological edge is going to continue. Volterra offers the highest energy efficiency in the industry and offers the highest power density in the industry. For customers, the energy efficiency translates into savings in energy costs for a server or extended battery life for a laptop. The high-density translates into space savings, which enable them to use small form factors for their blade servers or for their laptops. That is our great competitive advantage right now, and I think that will continue to be our main advantage going forward.
