TWST: Would you give us a brief historical sketch of the company and a picture
of the things you are doing at the present time? Mr. Ciphers: The company started in 1868 and since that time the company has
supplied stone that is unique to our particular quarry called Berea Sandstone"
to a variety of institutions, colleges, residential and commercial buildings,
and in every state in the United States. An example might be the restoration of
Milwaukee City Hall currently going on, which our stone was supplied to in the
1800s. TWST: What is Berea Sandstone? What makes it different from other sandstones? Mr. Ciphers: Berea Sandstone is primarily composed of 93% silicon. It comes in
several grades of two colors, gray and buff. The physical characteristics of the
stone are very good. For years it was used as foundations for homes and
buildings because of the high strength. It has a compression strength of an
average of 12,000 pounds PSI, which makes it very good. It has a very high-
density of grain. So from the standpoint of age, it lasts virtually forever. It
will outwear marble and granite.
