TWST: Would you give us a brief historical sketch of the company and a picture
of the things you are doing at the present time? Mr. Carradine: Healthaxis is a longtime participant in the healthcare insurance
industry. We have been in business for about 40 years. The company was started
as an insurance agency in 1965. It evolved to become a third-party
administrator, administering health plans for corporations and other employers
who self-funded their health insurance and other benefits plans. The company
then evolved to become a provider of systems software and services to other
third-party administrators that likewise administered health plans. We have been
doing that now as our core business since the mid-1970s.
Our market focus is solely healthcare and benefits programs. The competitive
landscape varies depending on what aspect of our business you are evaluating. If
you are discussing systems for benefits administration and claims adjudication,
then our competitors would include companies like TriZetto, which is probably
the largest, but also includes EDS, Amisys, Plexis, Sungard, Eldorado, and a few
others. Competition for BPO services would include companies like ACS,
SourceCorp, Data Dimensions, GTess, and a host of offshore companies. Web-based
solutions are provided by companies like HealthX. However, Healthaxis is one of
the few companies in our industry that actually provides a full spectrum set of
services to the industry. That is, we actually offer products and services that
deal with the full claims administration and health plan administration process,
from the receipt of claims from providers to the actual payments and
distribution of explanation of benefits. TWST: Who are some of your customers? Mr. Carradine: Mostly third-party administrators. Many of them are subsidiaries
of Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Some of them are large independent third-party
administrators. Two of our clients are top 10 TPAs in the country. Other
customers would include insurance companies and managed care organizations like
PPO networks or companies that interact with PPO networks.
