Mr. Brigham: ImmuCell went public back in 1987. We brought our first significant product, First DefenseŽ, to market in 1991. It's an antibody product that prevents scours, which is diarrhea in newborn calves. We spent the majority of our efforts in the 1990s developing human applications of that technology. In 1999, we refocused our strategy and our business on the animal health market, specifically the dairy and beef industries. That's what we've been doing since then and been doing it profitably. We went back to First Defense, our USDA- approved product, and started to build a commercial business around that.
TWST: Would you tell us about the problem you addressed with First Defense?
Mr. Brigham: It's a major problem in newborn calves. They are born into a dirty
environment and they're exposed to a lot of pathogens and they get diarrhea that
can cause morbidity and mortality. The disease becomes a problem before their
immune systems are mature and able to work for themselves. So in essence, what
we do with First Defense is provide a pre-formed immunity. We do the work for
the calf. We purify the antibodies that protect the calf from infection before
the calf is able do that for itself.
