TWST: Would you give us a brief historical sketch of the company and a picture
of the things you are doing at the present time? Mr. Miller: Ansoft is unique in some respects, because we are still run by the
original Founders, of which I'm one. Three of us founded this company back in
the mid-1980s: myself, coming from a financial and operations background;
Nicholas Csendes, who is our Chief Executive Officer; and his brother, Zoltan
Cendes. The foundation of the company came from Professor Zoltan Cendes' work at
Carnegie Mellon University. He is a recognized expert in the electromagnetic
analysis. I don't want to get too complicated here and I'm not an engineer, but
understanding these physics, we figured would be extremely important as the
world progressed on the electronics front over the years. We took the ability to
understand what is known as Maxwell's equations - electromagnetics - which is
the basic understanding of the electronics world, from the university and made
it usable for product design. This allows designers and the real world to
incorporate the understanding of electromagnetics/physics as they build the
products of today and tomorrow.
We started the company in 1985 and began developing the software. We really got
commercially going in the early 1990s. We went public in 1996, which would be at
$4.25. The stock now is trading at $25 on a split basis. Understanding those
physics became extremely important. Our software really took off with the
wireless world because these wireless products started to become more
complicated. Also, as everyday electronic devices become smaller and faster, you
need a better understanding of the physics affecting the performance of the
device. Ansoft allows you to understand the actual physics as these things were
operating. Currently, we see that as being a key factor. In the future, we think
it is going to become even more and more critical, and therefore should continue
to drive Ansoft's growth as it has in the past 10 years since we went public.
