Mr. McCaffrey: Resverlogix was formed six years ago and it is a company based on removing atherosclerotic plaque from the arteries. There are different ways of doing it. HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol, has been the main talk in the last few years. We have taken a sub-fraction of that, being Apolipoprotein A1, which is the main protein of HDL, 70% of it, and we have figured out how to induce transcription, therefore turning the gene on that makes more ApoA1. And the market itself is quite focused on increasing HDL, as the studies have shown that the highest predictors of cardiovascular incident, being death usually, are the relationship between ApoB, which is the main component in LDL, the bad cholesterol, and ApoA the main protein in HDL, the good cholesterol. The higher your ApoA1, the less likelihood of cardiovascular disease.
TWST: What's the derivation of your science?
Mr. McCaffrey: The derivation of the science actually started with our research
by Dr. Norman Wong, who was looking into polyphenols in red wines. In
particular, he was interested, in earliest days, in Resveratrol - hence our name
Resverlogix. We have moved far away from that. In our own studies, we learned a
lot about Resveratrol; however, it is not, in our opinion, therapeutically
possible, so we had gone into some synthetics and through some structure
activity relationship knowledge, we were able to really develop a chemistry
program to further our knowledge of successful drug development.
