TWST: Can we start with a short history of Bluespec as well as an overview of
what you do?
Mr. Tasker: The company was founded in June of 2003. We were founded with
technology from MIT, and we produce software that is used to design the
semiconductor chips that are used in all electronics. The software allows
engineers to raise the level of abstraction at which they design the electronic
circuits. And effectively by raising the level of abstraction you can do things
more correctly in a shorter amount of time. So, our value proposition is cut in
half the time taken by engineers to design and verify chips.
TWST: How unique is your product?
Mr. Tasker: In the market today, engineers describe their chips at a design
abstraction level called RTL; which stands for Register Transfer Level. And this
is the accepted way of describing electronic circuits and there is an entire
toolset and flow where the design entry point is RTL. You could think of RTL
design as analogous to assembly code written by software engineers. And in
effect, what we are doing is offering engineers a way of describing code at the
level of Java . This is part of an emerging market of ESL or electronic system
level design.
