TWST: May we start with a short introduction of what Yulex does?
Mr. Martin: Yulex Corporation is a bioscience company involved in the agriculture and medical business and has commercialized the only U.S. source of natural rubber and natural rubber latex from a raw crop called Guayule. Until now, the only commercial source of natural rubber in the world came from the Brazilian rubber tree.

TWST: What are its applications, and will it replace natural rubber?
Mr. Martin: The rubber produced from Guayule is identical from a chemical standpoint to the rubber produced from the Brazilian rubber tree, which is grown in Southeast Asia, which is a cis-1,4-polyisoprene. So, essentially any natural rubber products made from that tree can be made from Guayule. We are currently working with medical device manufacturers who manufacture medical gloves, catheters, condoms, dental dams and a variety of specialty products because the proteins contained in Guayule latex are different than the dangerous proteins in tropical rubber. People that have developed severe latex allergies to tropical rubber do not have reactions to Guayule latex and Guayule latex is safe in the operating room and other critical care areas of a hospital.
