TWST: What is QualMark? Mr. Scalese: QualMark Corporation is in the vibration business. Thus, we
focus our efforts in the vibration industry. The core part of our
business is accelerated testing, which encompasses HALT (Highly
Accelerated Life Testing) and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress
Screening). Those are applications that allow a product to be tested for
durability and reduce warranty failures in the field. It's used both in
the R&D process as well as incorporated into the manufacturing process.
The second component of our business is in electrodynamic vibration. The
electrodynamic vibration component is primarily used around a military
specification that industry has assumed and required. It is a higher
frequency vibration and a different test than accelerated testing, but
is used to test durability and expose product weakness. QualMark was
started by PhD engineers in 1991. The company went public in April 1996.
We have completed two acquisitions since then. So at this point, we are
looking to continue to expand our market through ancillary vibration
needs. TWST: What does that marketplace look like today? What are its dynamics
and what types of competitors are out there? What's the ultimate
differentiator for a company such as QualMark? Mr. Scalese: Our differentiator is our extensive knowledge and product
testing application base. Most of our competitors, especially in the
Accelerated Testing division, are merely manufacturers, whereas we
specialize in the technology and embrace the core knowledge surrounding
it. To clarify, this means that we have expanded the technology about 10
years ahead of our competitors. Therefore, when we go out to a customer,
we may be higher priced, but for that premium you certainly get a full
education revolving around that and a life-long partner.
