Dr. Henderson: The company was founded about 11 years ago with the intention of creating products in the nanotechnology space. We actually work at the interface between biotechnology and nanotechnology. The products that we provide are designed to enable the development of new technologies within this nanotechnology space.
TWST: Would you enlarge on the theme of nanotechnology and give us a
snapshot view of it?
Dr. Henderson: There are, of course, many definitions of nanotechnology.
A very rigorous one is that nanotechnology is a technology below 100
nanometers in spatial dimension. We think a little bit differently about
nanotechnology, and there are two key points. One is that it's not a
short-term, dot-com type of phenomenon, but rather nanotechnology is a
revolution analogous to the industrial revolution. It could well last
100 or 200 years. The second point is that there's actually a lot of
nanotechnology already in existence that has evolved over billions of
years; there are very amazing, little, so-called, Holy Grails of
nanotechnology on the biological side of the world. It's difficult, but
if one is able to take those concepts or even those existing things and
devices, and integrate those with what we call hard nanotechnology and
silicon devices, then one creates a whole lot of new opportunities. That
is why we've positioned the company at this interface between biotech
and nanotech.
