TWST: Would you give us a brief historical sketch of the company and a
picture of the things you're doing at the present time?
Mr. Paiva: Orthovita is a synthetic biomaterials company that is
developing novel products for the orthopedic industry. The company has
been in existence since 1992. It has been over the last four years that
we have really seen the fruits of our efforts in the commercialization
and distribution of these products in the United States. In the United
States, we currently sell through our network of independent sales
agencies, as well as our own direct sales reps. We have about 70 direct
sales reps on the ground. We think this is a unique franchise that we've
created in that it is a totally biomaterials-focused sales force that is
focused on the orthopedic industry.
TWST: What are your principal products?
Mr. Paiva: The lead product that we're selling today is a product called
VITOSS. It's a nonstructural, non-load bearing synthetic bone graft
substitute material that we believe provides a viable alternative to
what's considered to be the gold standard that's in use today, which is
autograft tissue. Our VITOSS scaffold material is used by surgeons to
fill the bony defect sites and it efficiently remodels into normal bone,
driven by the normal healing cascade that occurs in bone healing.
