TWST: What is Lamson & Sessions Company? Mr. Abel: We are a diversified manufacturer and marketer of
thermoplastic, electrical, and cable management products. We serve
various segments of the construction industry (residential, industrial,
commercial, utility), as well as the home improvement and
telecommunications infrastructure markets. TWST: What are the roots of this company? How did it get started? Mr. Abel: Lamson & Session was established in the mid-1860s, about 140
years ago. It was essentially a fastener company for the first 100 years
or so. As the company transitioned from a family-owned company to a
public one and different managements evolved, we diversified into a
broader range of various metal products. We've owned foundries,
manufactured aerospace and automotive fasteners, railroad cars, and a
variety of things ' all metal related. However, an acquisition that we
made back in the mid-1980s was a major paradigm shift into the
thermoplastic business. As we progressed through the late 1980s and into
the early 1990s, we divested the metal businesses because we didn't feel
that we had sufficient critical mass to grow and compete in those
markets. Instead, we concentrated on thermoplastic markets and have made
significant commitments to product development since that time. We've
evolved over the last 15 to 20 years into a company that serves all of
the markets I mentioned at the beginning of this interview with broad
product lines, high quality, high brand recognition and have developed a
very good growth profile.
