TWST: We would like to begin with a brief historical sketch of BSD
Medical Corporation and a picture of the things you are doing at the
present time. Mr. Mead: Let me begin with what we do. BSD Medical produces systems
that deliver precision-focused electromagnetic energy (in microwave and
RF frequencies) to bring diseased tissue up to therapeutic temperatures
as required by a number of medical therapies. Our primary emphasis has
been on treating cancer, but we also pioneered the use of microwave
thermal therapy for the treatment of medical problems caused by the
enlargement of the prostate, and we are responsible for much of the
technology that has become a major solution to men's health in urology.
Through the sale of a spinoff company that we created, we have used our
developments in benign prostate treatment to fund our primary business,
which is focused on the commercialization of our systems developed to
treat cancer. We have already obtained FDA approval for part of our
product line in cancer therapy, and in March of this year we submitted
an application to the FDA for approval of the major system in our cancer
treatment technology. We are currently working through the approval
process and on market preparation activities, hoping for the FDA's nod
to move forward with our full commercialization plans. The system
currently under review by the FDA (the BSD-2000) has been used and
tested in clinical trials in the United States and Europe, and it was
the recipient of the 'Technology Innovation of the Year Award' for
cancer therapy devices, as presented by Frost and Sullivan. TWST: Regarding this product line, would you tell us about the main
products in it? Mr. Mead: The BSD-500 family of systems is used to treat recurrent or
progressive superficial cancers, while the BSD-2000 systems are
undergoing clinical evaluations for the treatment of deeper cancers in
the pelvis. Our cancer treatment systems use microwave or RF energy to
heat and kill cancer and may increase the effectiveness of radiation
and/or chemotherapy. Cancer can be vulnerable to destruction by heat,
and heat can also weaken and sensitize cancer for more effective use as
an adjunct to radiation and chemotherapy. We use different technologies
to treat cancers on or near the surface of the body as opposed to those
located deeper in the body.
