TWST: What is COM DEV International? Mr. Keating: COM DEV International is a public company in Canada that is
involved in providing subsystems and equipment to the space market,
i.e., equipment on board satellites. We've been in the business for over
30 years and today we have 815 employees in four facilities on three
continents. We're a space technology company. Our claim to fame
historically has been, and is, that we are the most prolific supplier of
equipment to commercial communications satellites. In recent years we
have been strategically expanding our presence in the national security
and public safety market segment, and the civil/government market
segment. And we have had some solid success in these strategic thrusts.
The company's core capability is its comprehensive understanding of what
it takes to make highly reliable equipment for spacecraft applications
that operate in the most unforgiving environmental conditions. It must
survive extreme conditions not just during launch, but also while in
orbit for up to 15 years. Satellites are generally not serviceable, so
it's vitally important that they have a high level of inherent
reliability. This in turn requires very diligent and disciplined
processes, an extraordinary level of quality management, and a full
understanding of the environmental factors that will be in play during
the up to 15-year life of the satellite. When I took over the job as
CEO in November 2002 I made it clear to our stakeholders and employees
that we would focus our energies on the space market. We enjoy long-
term, enduring relationships with the key satellite builders and world
leadership in many of the products that we make. I see tremendous market
opportunity for COM DEV in our chosen space market and, as CEO, I have
been working to expand our presence in all its segments. In the past, we
lacked that clear focus on a single well-defined market and our
stakeholders were not well served by the dilution of our attention from
our core markets. We are now a focused company with a strong strategic
sense of where we are going. Now, the results are beginning to bear out
the logic of this strategy.
