TWST: What is Dick's Sporting Goods?
Mr. Magulick: Dick's Sporting Goods is an authentic full-line sporting goods retailer. We have over 250 stores in 34 states, primarily in the eastern half of the United States. Dick's was started in 1948 as a small bait and tackle shop by Dick Stack and, into the 1980s, it was a two- store chain. Mid-late in the 1980s and throughout the 1990s and beyond, the company developed a prototypical store designed to be a vehicle for growth, and as the organic growth opportunities became more available and apparent, we began capitalizing on them.

TWST: Give us an idea of what your store criteria are today as you grow.
Mr. Magulick: The strategy for us is to open stores in the prime real estate locations within a market's trade area. Certainly, there is a threshold as far as the number of people and different demographic characteristics such as income levels. Once those are met, we are looking for that prime real estate within any particular trade area. Sometimes that's at a mall and sometimes that is in a power center with other specialty retailers, such as in the categories of electronics, books or home improvement.
